Happy Belated New Year!

I know that those of you in the more northern part of the district have already seen several feet of snow so far this winter, but here in SE Wisconsin, we have seen very little and have actually experienced many days of above normal temperatures. Down here in Racine, we got quite the fright on Halloween when 5" of snow fell during the day, but we haven't seen anything but a trace since! That could all change Friday as a major winter storm may track far enough north to bring us the first snow storm of 2020. I personally enjoy winter...I love snowshoeing, hot chocolate, real wood fires and being able to catch up with so many things that fall by the wayside during rose season. Like this website for example! My New Year's resolution was to get it finished this month and, thanks to Teddy, my mostly patient, tech savy son, I am happy to say that the mission is almost accomplished. Just waiting for some lists to link and contact info to upload and the NCD Website will be pretty complete for the next few months. I am particularly happy with the Gallery page which includes photos of and information on almost every winning entry from the district rose show! If you think I am missing any key pieces of information or want to add or update anything on the site let me know. I hope to do a blog post on rose news and scoops every Friday to keep in touch and of course I hope to see many of you at the Spring Meeting in March!

Halloween Snow

2019 NCD Convention & Rose Show was FanTastic!

It was a FanTastic rose show and convention weekend! Dear friends gathered; new friendships were created; and beauty and information were shared, all thanks to the rose. The weekend started out on Friday night with the best hospitality suite ever, thanks to Susan Konkol and Laura Beattie who took the sports theme, FanTastic Roses, and ran with it. Our "referees" for the weekend, they worked hard to keep us in line. Pick-a-Pair returned with six competive teams. Our four out-of-town arrangement judges had fun evaluating the entries, noting with special pleasure Ruth and Diane Rutkowski's entry of a matched pair of 'Megan Dawn' that was themed the Kentucky Derby, complete with an empty bottle of bourbon. Pick-a-Pair winners were Carrie Bergs and Karen Franco, whose entry of a matched pair of 'Sandy's Pick' was themed Powder Puff Football.

Exhibitors entered beautiful specimens, challenge classes, photographs and arrangements. In total, there were 285 entries; 222 horticulture, 13 photographs, and 50 designs. The American Box class, consisting of nine blooms arranged in a quilt-like pattern, was new to the show this year. Congratulations to Joe and Carrie Bergs for a beautiful entry. Bruce Barr's arrangement in the class, Off the Glass, was judged 'Best in Show'. It is very unusual that an arrangement is given such an honor. Congratulations to all the winners! Two presentations were given Saturday afternoon. First, Dr. Vera Krischik, professor of entomology from the University of Minnesota, spoke on insect pests and diseases that affect our roses. The information was very thorough. Recommendations of best preventative practices were given as well as the best choices for control should the problems get out of hand. Bruce Barr gave a presentation on Gene Boerner, affectionately known as Papa Floribunda. Boerner was intrumental in the passage of U.S. plant patent law, introducing the floribunda rose class to America, and for saving the best-of-the-best of Europe's new rose seedlings at the start of World War II.

The evening banquet speaker was Christian Bedard, head hybridizer of Weeks Roses. Christian reviewed his career in hybridization and introduced us to the newest roses that will be hitting the market in 2020 and 2021. Be on the lookout for more beautiful roses for your gardens! To conclude the evening, NCD Director Lois Ann Helegson presented the Silver Medal to John Turek for his outstanding servcice to our district and the ARS and awarded the year's outstanding consulting rosarian honor to Don Zoromski and the outstanding judge honor to Jim Beardsley. Congratulations to our distinguised award winners! The weekend culminated with a garden tour and brunch hosted by Gregg and Diane Sommers. It was a wonderful chance to catch up with rose friends and to view beautiful roses in a beautiful setting. Thank you, Diane and Gregg, for opening your home and gardens!

And thank you to all who helped make this a very special, successful rose show and nconvention. Your hard work, creativity and commitment to the society are greatly appreciated. Join us for a sports-infused “FanTastic” weekend of roses, fun and education, September 6-8, at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Pewaukee. The weekend kicks off on Friday night with two pre-show challenge classes; Pick-a-Pair and Photo Finish, followed by our pre-game party in the Hospitality Suite. On Saturday, experience the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat as the competition heats up at the Rose Show! Join the team at half-time for a buffet lunch and then settle into the stands for the second half to learn from our line-up of All-Stars:

Dr. Vera Krischik, associate professor of entomology at the University of Minnesota will share her expertise about the management of rose pests.
Bruce Barr will charm us with his up-close and personal look into the life of Eugene Boerner or “Papa Floribunda” as he was fondly known for his role in establishing and promoting the floribunda rose.This is a timely tribute as 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of Boerner’s successful mission to save 1200 rose varieties and 10,000 cuttings from Western Europe on the eve of WWII.

Saturday evening, fans are invited to the Winner’s Circle for the banquet, awards presentation and key note address by Christian Bedard. Christian is Research Director and Licensing Manager for Weeks roses in Pomona, California, one of the largest suppliers of roses in the United States. His presentation topic will be “Hybridizing for the 21st Century & New Roses.”

On Sunday you’ll want to “Run for the Roses” to Greg & Diane Sommers home for brunch and a garden tour beginning at 9 am. Toast your teammates with mimosa’s and Bloody Marys! Registration information is available under NCD Events on the home page. Hope to see you in September!
